Citrix has 3 baseline platform license editions available for purchase. These consist of Standard, Enterprise, and Platinum (with Standard being the most basic, and Platinum having to largest number of available features for use). The license file and edition that is purchased, downloaded, and applied to your NetScaler appliance will unlock the features/services that are available for use under the specific edition. The same three licensing editions are available and the same across the board no matter if the VPX, MPX, or SDX platform was purchased.

When comparing available licensing editions and options for purchase, there are currently 4 available XenApp and 3 available XenDesktop license editions to choose from. High level information is as follows when dividing the different available editions after being separated out based on the XenApp or XenDesktop product suites under the 7.9 version and product line.

  • Citrix XenApp Product Line (4 available editions for purchase)
    • XenApp Secure Browser
      • (uncommon, rarely seen in real-world to date)
    • XenApp Advanced Edition
      • (used, but not as common as Enterprise and Platinum editions)
    • XenApp Enterprise Edition
      • (very popular/common edition of use)
    • XenApp Platinum Edition
      • (very popular/common edition of use)

Shown below is a detailed breakdown for each edition and the main differences between the different available editions available for use under your organization.

(1) – Citrix XenApp 7.9 Secure Browser Edition:

  • Product Edition Overview Information:
    • The most basic edition available for purchase.
    • Product Edition popularity in real-world by organizations based on personal IT Consulting experience
      • Very rare and not so common Edition being used by organizations today
  • Advantages, Key Available Features:
    • Available for very generalized purpose and niche organization use case scenarios. Primary use case scenario allowing only for the ability to present web based applications (both in-house web based applications and SaaS based).
    • Supporting all and any Web Browser when presenting web based application(s) to your end-users. Ability to present applications through any PC based and supported web browser (Ex- IE, FireFox, Chrome).
    • Supported levels of integration with Citrix NetScaler network appliance and cloud based services.
      • Centralized and secure remote access to web application presentation using NetScaler ICA Proxy (reverse gateway), and two-form authentication support.
      • NetScaler load balancing services to available back-end servers.
      • Integrated Federation authentication services using either SAML or ADFS.
      • Support for Citrix ShareFile integration and usage.
      • Supported integration with Microsoft Azure hybrid cloud systems provisioning for dynamic back-end workload availability.
      • Amazon Web Services Integration (AWS). Hybrid cloud provisioning, similar as the integration available in using MS Azure services mentioned above.
      • Integrated support with Citrix CloudPlatform dynamic provisioning of back-end workloads from public, private and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Product Edition Main Disadvantages and Features Not Available:
    • Limited in only allowing presentation of web based applications
      • Unable to present client-server applications, server/session based computing XenApp full desktop connection experience, or Workstation OS based VDI model (XenDesktop).
      • Probably not the right fit for most organizations, especially those needing flexibility in available methods of application, data, resource presentation models depending on situation.
        • Only good candidate for purchase and use under very specific use case situations/environments.

(2) – Citrix XenApp 7.9 Advanced Edition:

  • Product Edition Overview Information:
    • Second to last (out of four total XenApp editions) as it relates to available product features and functionality.
    • Product edition popularity level seen in the real-world as of today. Definitely seen and used, but not nearly as p0pular as Enterprise and Platinum Editions
    • Main purposes, methods of presentation, and use case scenarios
      • Ability to present both web based applications (on-premise hosted and SaaS), and Windows based OS client/server applications to organization end-users.
      • Ability to present full desktop experience using session/server based computing model (using back-end Server based OS systems or XenApp session host servers).
  • Advantages, Key Available Features:
